Skin, Allergy & Dermatology Care
Dermatology
Less scratching. More living.
Fungus, bacteria, parasites, and allergies can all seriously affect your pet’s skin, leading to intense itching and discomfort. At Red Deer Vet, we offer dermatology services to diagnose and treat a wide range of common allergies and skin conditions in pets.
Allergies are one of the most frequent skin issues seen in dogs and cats. Similar to humans, pets can react to environmental triggers. However, instead of respiratory symptoms, pets typically develop irritated, inflamed skin that leads to persistent itching—a condition known as allergic dermatitis.
By the time many pets receive treatment for allergies, they may also have developed secondary skin infections. These infections, often caused by bacteria or fungus entering through irritated or broken skin, can usually be managed with appropriate medications. Other common conditions we treat include ear infections (otitis), which are often linked to mites.
If your pet is frequently scratching, licking, or pawing at their ears, a dermatological exam may be helpful. Additional signs of infection can include dandruff, hair loss, and red, scaly, or oozing skin. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact us promptly. Some skin conditions, such as mange and ringworm, can be passed to humans, making early treatment especially important.
